Caffeine pouches take the format people know from nicotine pouches — a small white pouch tucked under the upper lip — and fill it with caffeine instead. They are often sold as "energy pouches". For adults who want caffeine without a drink, and without nicotine, they are a convenient alternative to another coffee or a can of energy drink.
This guide explains what is in them, how much caffeine one contains compared with familiar drinks, what European food-safety guidance says about caffeine, and how to fit them into a sensible day.
A caffeine pouch is a pre-portioned pouch containing caffeine together with the carrier ingredients used in most pouch products: a plant-based filler, water, sweeteners and flavourings. You place it under the upper lip and leave it there; you do not chew or swallow it. Some of the caffeine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth and some is swallowed with saliva.
The caffeine pouches we stock are the K#RWA Energy line, in three flavours: Blueberry, Fizzy Cherry and Triple Mango. Each can holds 20 pouches. The can states 100 mg of caffeine per pouch and that the product is nicotine-free. You will find them in their own category, Caffeine pouches, never mixed in with the nicotine strength bands.
100 mg is a meaningful amount of caffeine — in the same range as a cup of coffee. Here is how it compares with typical servings, using the figures the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published with its 2015 opinion on caffeine:
| Serving | Typical caffeine |
|---|---|
| One K#RWA Energy pouch | 100 mg (stated on the can) |
| Filter coffee, 200 ml | about 90 mg |
| Espresso, 60 ml | about 80 mg |
| Energy drink, 250 ml can | about 80 mg |
| Black tea, 220 ml | about 50 mg |
| Cola, 355 ml can | about 40 mg |
| Milk chocolate, 50 g | about 10 mg |
Drink figures vary with brand, bean and brewing, so treat them as approximate. The pouch figure is the manufacturer's statement.
The practical takeaway: one pouch is roughly one coffee. Two pouches are roughly two coffees, and so on.
In 2015 EFSA reviewed the evidence and concluded that, for healthy adults:
Applied to 100 mg pouches, that means:
These are guidance figures for healthy adults, not targets. Many people feel the effects of caffeine well below them, and sensitivity varies a great deal from person to person.
It is easy to lose count, so here are three ordinary days worked through with the typical figures above:
| A day like this | Caffeine | Against EFSA's 400 mg daily figure |
|---|---|---|
| Two filter coffees (90 + 90) and one pouch (100) | about 280 mg | within it |
| An espresso (80), an energy drink (80) and two pouches (200) | about 360 mg | close to it |
| Three filter coffees (270) and two pouches (200) | about 470 mg | over it |
The third day is not unusual for a heavy coffee drinker who adds a couple of pouches — which is exactly why it is worth counting. If you add pouches, take something else away.
Timing matters as well as totals. EFSA noted that caffeine around the 100 mg level, taken close to bedtime, can affect sleep in some adults. A pouch in the late afternoon is, for sleep purposes, a late-afternoon coffee.
| Caffeine pouch (K#RWA Energy) | Filter coffee (200 ml) | Energy drink (250 ml) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caffeine | 100 mg (stated) | about 90 mg | about 80 mg |
| Sugar | See the can's ingredient list | None unless added | Varies; many contain sugar |
| Needs a drink or cup | No | Yes | Yes |
| Portable | A can in a pocket | Needs preparing or buying | A can to carry |
| How it is taken | Under the lip | Drunk | Drunk |
None of this makes a pouch better or worse than a coffee; it is a different format with a similar amount of caffeine.
The easiest mistake with any new caffeine source is forgetting it adds to what you already have. If you drink two coffees a day, a pouch is a third, not a replacement, unless you actually swap one out.
Caffeine's effects build over a while and last for hours. Leave a decent gap between pouches rather than taking another because the first has not "kicked in" yet.
Caffeine late in the day is a common cause of poor sleep. Many people avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening; a pouch is no different from a coffee in that respect.
Too much caffeine commonly causes restlessness, jitteriness, a fast heartbeat, an upset stomach, headache and difficulty sleeping. If you notice these, take the pouch out and skip the next one.
Caffeine pouches and nicotine pouches are different products with different effects. Using both at once does not make either work better, and it makes it harder to tell how each is affecting you. Our article on nicotine vs caffeine pouches explains the difference in detail.
Keep cans closed, cool and away from direct sunlight, as you would any pouch product — our storage guide covers this — and out of reach of children.
K#RWA Energy comes in three flavours that also appear in K#RWA's nicotine ranges:
All three carry the same 100 mg of caffeine per pouch, so the choice is purely one of taste. See them all in Caffeine pouches.
K#RWA uses the same flavour names across its nicotine and caffeine lines. Before ordering, check which column you are in:
| Flavour | K#RWA Collection (nicotine) | K#RWA Collection Max (nicotine) | K#RWA Energy (caffeine) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blueberry | Blueberry Ice, 12 mg nicotine | Blueberry Ice, 43 mg nicotine | Blueberry, 100 mg caffeine |
| Fizzy Cherry | 12 mg nicotine | 43 mg nicotine | 100 mg caffeine |
| Triple Mango | 12 mg nicotine | 43 mg nicotine | 100 mg caffeine |
Only the last column is nicotine-free. On our site it is also the only one listed under caffeine pouches.
The K#RWA Energy pouches we stock state 100 mg of caffeine per pouch on the can, roughly the amount in a 200 ml cup of filter coffee.
EFSA's guidance for healthy adults is up to about 400 mg of caffeine a day from all sources, and up to about 200 mg in a single dose. At 100 mg each, four pouches reach the daily figure before counting any drinks.
K#RWA Energy pouches are nicotine-free according to the can. Always check the can of any other brand.
EFSA's guidance during pregnancy is no more than about 200 mg of caffeine a day from all sources. Follow your own medical advice; many people avoid concentrated caffeine products altogether while pregnant.
Nicotine pouches are intended for adult users only. They should be used responsibly, kept out of reach of children and pets, and never swallowed.
Nicotine per pouch is on every card; the full specification is on each product page.
