Choosing a nicotine strength: 2–10, 11–20, 21–30 and over 30 mg

· Pouch Empire Editorial · 6 min read

Snowman nicotine pouch cans; Arctic Kick and Fresh Mint come at 12, 18 and 30 mg per pouch

Strength is the first choice you make with a nicotine pouch and the one that matters most. Flavour can be a matter of mood; strength decides how a pouch actually feels. This guide explains the four bands we use, what you will find in each, and how to move between them without overdoing it.

It is written for adults who already use nicotine. If you do not, nicotine pouches are not a product to start with.

Why bands, and why per pouch

Brands describe strength in their own ways — words like "strong" or "extreme", dot scales, colours, or a number that is sometimes per pouch and sometimes per gram. Those scales do not line up across brands. A "strong" from one maker can contain less nicotine than a "regular" from another.

So we ignore the labels and group every product by one fact: milligrams of nicotine per pouch. If you are not sure how that differs from mg per gram, read mg per pouch vs mg per gram first. The bands are:

Bandmg of nicotine per pouchIn plain terms
2–10 mg2 to 10The lighter end of our range
11–20 mgmore than 10, up to 20The middle of the market
21–30 mgmore than 20, up to 30Strong, for experienced users
Over 30 mgmore than 30Our strongest products

Decimals go where the number puts them: a 9.96 mg pouch is in the first band, a 10.9 mg pouch in the second, and a 30 mg pouch in the third.

The 2–10 mg band

This is where you find the lightest pouches we stock: 51 Pouches Watermelon and Strawberry Kiwi at 4 mg, Greatest Cold Dry at 8 mg and Arctic Cold Dry at 9.96 mg, 51 Pouches at 10 mg, VELO Crispy Peppermint at 10 mg and the NOIS White line's Mint and Spearmint at 10 mg.

It suits adult nicotine users who want a lighter pouch, who use pouches occasionally, or who are moving from another nicotine product and want to begin conservatively. It is also where people often settle for daytime use. A light pouch is not a "lesser" product: many of these are carefully flavoured and simply deliver less nicotine.

The 11–20 mg band

The broadest band in our shop and, for many regular users, the everyday range. It covers K#RWA and K#RWA Collection at 12 mg, Snowman at 12 and 18 mg, KLINT from 11.2 to 17.5 mg, VELO at 10.9 and 14 mg, Greatest Cold Dry Intense at 11.6 mg and Hyper at 16.8 mg, NOIS at 12.5 and 17.5 mg, and 51 Pouches at 16 mg.

Because so many brands meet here, it is the best band for exploring flavour at a fairly consistent strength. If you know you like around 12 mg, you can compare a K#RWA berry, a Snowman mint and a NOIS cherry and judge them on taste rather than strength.

The 21–30 mg band

From here pouches are clearly strong and meant for experienced users. The band holds the PABLO Exclusive range at 30 mg and PABLO Ice Cold XXL at 24 mg, ZEUS at 25 mg, the NOIS Black line at 25 mg, KLINT Alaskan Mint at 21 mg and Snowman Arctic Kick and Fresh Mint at 30 mg.

If you are coming up from the 11–20 band, a 21–25 mg product is a more measured step than jumping straight to 30.

Over 30 mg

Our strongest products: CUBA at 43 mg per pouch across nineteen flavours, K#RWA Collection Max at 43 mg, and the NICCOS X-collection at 35 mg (the NICCOS figure comes from retailer listings and is awaiting confirmation from the supplier). These are for experienced users who know how they react to high-strength pouches. They are not a starting point and not a step to take casually.

How to choose

Start from what you know

If you already use pouches, find the mg per pouch of the product you use now and start in that band. If the can only shows mg per gram, convert it first — it is easy to overestimate a product by reading the larger number.

If you are switching from another nicotine product

There is no reliable conversion between cigarettes, vapes and pouches, because the way nicotine is delivered and absorbed differs. The sensible approach is to begin at the lower end, in the 2–10 or lower 11–20 band, and adjust over several days rather than several minutes.

Move one step at a time

Changing strength works best in small steps. Snowman makes this unusually easy: Arctic Kick and Fresh Mint each come at 12, 18 and 30 mg, so you can change strength while keeping the same flavour. Within the 11–20 band, the step from 12 to 17.5 mg (for example KLINT Freeze Mint to Avalanche Mint) is a gentler move than 12 to 30.

Remember that feel and dose are not the same

Two pouches with the same mg per pouch can feel different. Moisture, pH, pouch size and cooling flavourings all change how quickly a pouch is felt. A dry, slim pouch may feel milder at first than a moist one at the same strength. Judge a product over a few uses, not one.

Flavours you can follow up and down the bands

The gentlest way to change strength is to keep the flavour and change only the milligrams. These are the ladders available in our range:

FlavourStrengths available (mg per pouch)Bands covered
Snowman Arctic Kick12 · 18 · 3011–20, 21–30
Snowman Fresh Mint12 · 18 · 3011–20, 21–30
51 Pouches Strawberry Kiwi4 · 162–10, 11–20
51 Pouches Blueberry Forest10 · 162–10, 11–20
51 Pouches Cherry Cola10 · 162–10, 11–20
Greatest Cold Dry8 · 11.6 · 16.82–10, 11–20
NOIS spearmint (Spearmint, Cool Strong, Cool Strong Extreme)10 · 17.5 · 252–10, 11–20, 21–30
NOIS Cherry (Cherry Ice, Cherry Extreme)12.5 · 2511–20, 21–30
NOIS Grape (Grape Ice, Grape Extreme)12.5 · 2511–20, 21–30
K#RWA Collection / Collection Max (Grape Ice, Fizzy Cherry, Triple Mango, Strong Mint, Blueberry Ice)12 · 4311–20, over 30

Two cautions. First, the K#RWA pair is not a gentle step: 12 to 43 mg is more than three times the nicotine, so it only makes sense for someone who already uses very strong pouches and wants the lower version too. Second, a ladder's top rung is not a goal. Most people find a strength that suits them and stay there.

Three worked examples

"I use a 12 mg mint every day and it feels a little light." Stay with mint and move within the 11–20 band rather than leaving it: Snowman Fresh Mint 18 mg, KLINT Avalanche Mint 17.5 mg or NOIS Cool Strong 17.5 mg are all around a 50% increase. Give it a few days before deciding whether it suits you.

"I want something lighter for daytime." Keep your usual product for when you want it and add a lighter one from the 2–10 band: Greatest Cold Dry Strong at 8 mg, or 51 Pouches Watermelon at 4 mg if you prefer fruit. Many regular users keep two strengths for different parts of the day.

"I'm coming from a 30 mg PABLO and want to try CUBA." CUBA is 43 mg per pouch — about 40% more nicotine than a 30 mg PABLO, even though both are labelled "strong" in their own ways. Try a single can first, and consider shorter sessions until you know how it feels.

Common mistakes when choosing strength

  • Reading mg per gram as the dose. CUBA's "66 mg/g" is 43 mg per pouch; NICCOS's "50 mg/g" is about 35 mg. Compare per pouch.
  • Trusting the word on the can. Greatest Cold Dry *Strong* is 8 mg; Snowman *Strong* is 12 mg; PABLO's range is 30 mg. The words do not line up across brands.
  • Jumping several bands at once. Moving from 12 mg to 43 mg in one go is the commonest route to an unpleasant first pouch.
  • Judging after one pouch. Dry and moist pouches, cooled and uncooled flavours, all feel different at first. Give a new product a few uses.
  • Using pouches back to back to "make up" strength. If a pouch feels too light, choose a stronger product rather than stacking pouches; it is easier to judge.

Signs a pouch is stronger than you need

Too much nicotine is unpleasant, and the signs are well known:

  • nausea or an upset stomach;
  • dizziness or light-headedness;
  • headache;
  • hiccups;
  • a racing or pounding heartbeat;
  • sweating or feeling clammy.

If you notice any of these, take the pouch out. The effects usually ease once you stop. Next time, choose a lower strength, keep the pouch in for a shorter time, or leave more time between pouches. If symptoms are severe or do not pass, seek medical advice.

How long to keep a pouch in

Many users keep a pouch in for around 20 to 30 minutes, but there is no rule that you must keep it in for a set time. With a stronger product, a shorter session is a simple way to take less nicotine without changing what you buy.

A note on using pouches responsibly

  • Nicotine is addictive at every strength.
  • Pouches are not for anyone under the legal age, for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for anyone advised by a doctor to avoid nicotine.
  • Keep cans out of reach of children and pets.
  • Stronger is not better. The right strength is the lowest one that works for you.

Where to go next

Questions and answers

Which strength band should I start with?

Start from the mg per pouch you already use. If you are switching from another nicotine product, begin at the lower end of the 2–10 or 11–20 mg band and adjust gradually.

Which band is a 10.9 mg pouch in?

The 11–20 mg band. 2–10 covers up to and including 10 mg; anything above 10 and up to 20 is in 11–20.

Are strength words like "extra strong" comparable between brands?

No. Each brand uses its own scale. Compare products by mg of nicotine per pouch instead.

What should I do if a pouch feels too strong?

Take it out. Nausea, dizziness, headache, hiccups or a racing heartbeat are signs of too much nicotine. Choose a lower strength or shorter sessions next time.

Nicotine pouches are intended for adult users only. They should be used responsibly, kept out of reach of children and pets, and never swallowed.
